Whale Watching Safari 1Pm Whales Whales everywhere! As soon as the passengers arrived at Kelsey Bay in our fabulously comfortable bus, Captain Shaun and our naturalist Sherri ushered everyone onto the Tenacious III and headed straight to Telegraph Cove! The A25 clan, 10 Northern Resident Orca Whales, were hanging out and fishing right in front of Telegraph Cove. Powering down the Tenacious III, Captain Shaun lowered our hydrophone into the ocean, filling the air with the “pings” of Resident Orca echo-location! It is truly a magnificent sound; Resident Orcas are the noisier of the Orca subspecies, because fish have extremely poor hearing. Transient orcas are often very silent because they hunt marine mammals, which have excellent hearing. Leaving the Orcas to their lunch, the Tenacious III headed off towards Plumper’s Islands where they were treated to a fantastic Humpback show! 6 Humpbacks were lunge feeding in the water and tail lobbing for almost 15 minutes! What a fantastic way to enjoy lunch! Also spotted near the Humpbacks were 10 Dall’s Porpoise and 3 very large Stellar Sea Lions. Along the shores of Plumper’s Islands were 4 mature Bald Eagles and a ton of Rhinoceros Auklet. On the way home last night, many of the passengers fell asleep in the super comfortable bus, always a good sign. What a fabulous day!
