Whales breach when they are having fun. It is usually a long, slow - TopicsExpress

Whales breach when they are having fun. It is usually a long, slow breach. They also breach when there is danger. Short, sharp sounding splats on the water. A warning to back off sometimes. One Sunday, when all of Tonga would normally be asleep or in church, I was reading outside, alone on my side of the island. I heard the baby whale that had been born next to the reef in front of my cabin breaching with quick and loud slaps. Looking out through the trees that kept me invisible, I saw a whale swim boat backing up, forcing the baby whale between them and the reef. Trapping her there, they were getting ready to put in swimmers when I ran screaming out of the bushes. I had been reading naked. The reef out front was covered by about a 8 inches of water with the rising tide. I ran across the reef towards the boat, trying to wrap a sarong around me with one hand while filming with the other hand, wild hair flying everywhere, still yelling at them. Apparently I looked like I was running on the water! You have never seen a boat take off so fast in Tonga. Rumors went around about the crazy naked woman on Fofoa who walks on water to save baby whales. That was the last whale swim boat to come near my reef the rest of season. from the book Swimming with Whales Revealed
