What BIRDMAN does better than any [other film about theater] is capture how dizzying, both intellectually and emotionally, it can be to make theater. The film’s virtuoso art direction–the way the camera careens about its backstage setting–not only contains us within the crumbling psyche of its protagonist, it also recreates theater’s claustrophobic hothouse conditions. These are the conditions we thrive in, the only ones that can lead to transcendent work. It constitutes as true an ode to that work as I can remember seeing.
