What Denomination? How does one affirm that he is “just a Christian” in the modern religious world? If you let it be known that you are a Christian, the usual question is, “To which denomination do you belong?” The modern mind cannot conceive of the possibility of someone not being denominational, but simply and merely a Christian. The easy answer is to say, “Church of Christ,” but this is so misleading. Since we belong to Christ, we truly are His church or a “church of Christ,” but I do not want to belong to any “Church of Christ” denomination. When I’m asked the inevitable question, I usually say, “I am a part of a group of Christians who strive not to be denominational.” Then, the response is, “Yeah, but to what church do you go?” To which, I usually give the address where we meet. Then, the response usually comes, sometimes with irritation, “But what does the sign say that identifies your building.” Then, they have me and I am required to say, “church of Christ,” but try to emphasize the little “c” on the church... which is hard to do when in conversation. So, we wrestle with attempting to show the world that we want to be “Christians only.” While it may be difficult to help some people understand who we are... let’s be sure that we know who we are... and conduct ourselves accordingly.
