What I think we white folks need to pray for is the humility to understand that we dont understand. We need to pray for the humility to be teachable, to listen to folks of color, to believe the stories we hear and to contemplate what we can do to become educated, compassionate and responsible citizens. We cant all just get along without getting informed. Some of us get a head start at life and others are gunned down in the street, thrown in jail and dehumanized all the time and for centuries. Praying for peace means praying for the desire to wake up and see how we benefit from racism and other structures of oppression. This is a broken, painfully unjust and cruel system but we dont suffer from it in the same way. Its too easy to turn our heads and hide in our segregated communities. Privilege tells us not to learn about the lived reality of others. Privilege tells us to deny anothers experience and every time we do we are engaging in a violent act. No justice no peace.
