What If? Wednesday In The Blink of an Eye It’s a beautiful day, so you and your best buddy decide to head out to the range. It’s not too crowded and you’re there for about an hour getting a final zero confirmation on your hunting rifles. Then, all of a sudden you hear a buzzing, whirring sound and a sharp slapping sound, like someone slapping a side of beef and at that same instant you hear your buddy yell out in surprise. As you look over, you see some kind of reddish vapor near him and realize it’s blood as you see a spray of bright red blood squirt from between the fingers he now has wrapped around his leg above the knee. He slowly crumples to the ground, face pale, eyes wide, looking up at you, pleading with you to help him. He says, “I’m hit bad, man. Help me.” You tell the shooters next to you to call 911 and get EMS on the way and to tell them that there’s been an accident at the range. You then look for something to help your buddy as your mind is flooded with thoughts and you put both of your hands over the wound and hold as much pressure as you can, but it doesn’t seem to help. “So much blood all over the place.” “What do I do?” “I don’t have a med kit and neither does he.” “I didn’t think anything like this would ever happen. We’re both safe shooters.” “I should’ve gotten some first-aid training.” “God, that’s a lot of blood.” “How can I stop it?” You yell to the folks around you and ask if anyone has a med kit or if anyone is trained. No one does. On the ground next to you, your buddy’s pleas have grown quieter and less emphatic. It’s going to be at least 15 minutes before EMS arrives and your buddy got injured less than 30 seconds ago. Remember, all bleeding will eventually stop. How that happens, well, that’s entirely up to you. It can all happen in the blink of an eye. What if? SIMPLICITY UNDER STRESS darkangelmedical
