What Im about to write probably means nothing at all. But its the first of the year, and Ive taken the day to jump from subject to subject seeing where it all leads -- watching videos, reading articles, and using various references I hear or read as the starting point of a new thread to follow. Its fun -- and sometimes you end up running into really interesting things that way. For instance, watching a video on the conman James Hydrick who managed to convince a whole lot of people that he could move objects with the power of his mind. He was successful enough be invited to make several TV appearances to demonstrate his powers, and was even invited to Egypt to demonstrate for the family of then Eqyptian President, Anwar Sadat. Eventually, a professional magician figured out his techniques, busted him, and got him to confess to his con on camera. An investigation into his abusive childhood followed in an attempt to piece together a picture of why he did what he did. But what came as a real surprise, right toward the end, was when Hydrick claimed a connection to both Muharem Kurbegovic (the Alphabet Bomber and founder of a Los Angeles group he called Aliens in America), and convicted assassin of Bobby Kennedy, Sirhan Sirhan. Looking for any more information on a connection between any of them turned up nothing (so far), but it did lead me to this really bizarre tale of an apparent suicide in downtown LA just before the TB outbreak of 2013 in Skid Row. The story begins with a 2005 horror movie entitled Dark Water. In the movie, a mother (Dahlia) and daughter (Cecilia) move into a rundown apartment. The apartment is plagued with nasty dark water which, as it turns out, has to do with the fact that a girl years earlier had committed suicide by drowning herself in the hotels rooftop water tank. The ghost of the girl becomes the imaginary friend of the daughter, Cecilia, and apparently all sorts of creepiness ensues. Ive never seen the movie, but thats usually what happens in the horror genre. The end of the movie (from the IMDB plot synopsis) features a scene where Cecilia gets stranded in a broken elevator with her imaginary friend. So, the main points are these: 1) Rundown apartment with nasty dark water 2) Apparent suicide in the rooftop water tank, causing said nasty water 3) Non-functioning elevator with a girl talking to someone no one else can see. 4) A mother named Dahlia, with a daughter named Cecilia. Point four needs a little explanation. What is interesting about the mothers name is that it is damn close to the famous unsolved murder of Elizabeth Short in LA back in 1924. She was nicknamed Black Dahlia by the press (they did that back in those days). The murder was suspected to be ritualistic (as in some sort of Satanic ritual) due to the way her body had been mutilated, which included being sliced in half at the waist! Yeah...charming. As for the daughters name, Cecilia...that brings us to the apparent suicide of 2013. The incident occurred at a rundown hotel in downtown LA, right next to the Skid Row district (that was about to suffer an outbreak of TB a few weeks later), called the Cecil Hotel...which is damn close to the name Cecilia, obviously. The hotel rents long term stay rooms, which has turned it into something more of a rundown apartment building than hotel. It also has a somewhat creepy history as it has been home to two serial killers and quite a few suicides. It still rented out short term hotel rooms, too -- no doubt very cheap, given its location -- and one of those rooms had been rented by a Canadian tourist named Elisa Lam. The last time Elisa Lam was seen alive was on the hotels security camera in an elevator, acting very strangely. She walked into the elevator and appeared to push all of the elevator buttons, then waited for the elevator to do something, but to no avail. The elevator had stopped working. After pushing more buttons, she walked back out into the hallway, still in view of the security camera, and appeared to begin to talk to someone who we cant see. She eventually gave up on the elevator and walked away, at which point the elevator began to work normally again. You can see the actual security camera footage here: https://youtube/watch?v=3TjVBpyTeZM Elisa Lam disappeared, and would have perhaps become just another statistic in a missing person report, except that some time after her disappearance, the water at the Cecil Hotel turned dark and had a foul smell and taste. The investigation lead to the hotels rooftop water tank, in which was found the dead body of Elisa Lam. Apparently, people in the hotel had actually been drinking her decaying corpse...right next to Skid Row, where there was about to be a mysterious TB outbreak. And somehow, key elements of this true story were amazingly close to a horror movie named Dark Water that had been released seven years earlier. Even the fact that she had drowned in one of the rooftop water tanks was a bizarre bit of synchronicity with the movie because of how unlikely that particular type of suicide would be. As you can see from this picture, they arent exactly easy to get in to. tribktla.files.wordpress/2013/02/elisa-lam-body.jpg As I said, it probably means nothing...but it is damn mysterious. And if it stopped there it would be mysterious enough. But theres one last little detail that will really have you scratching your head. The most effective test for TB -- the one that was most likely used in the Skid Row TB outbreak -- is called LAM-ELISA. Go figure.
