What Is In A Name? There are two main political parties in Nigeria right now: a supposedly conservative party (PDP),and a supposedly Progressive party (APC). The former is suppose to be holding on to doing things like it has always been done and is supposed to be resisting any change of the status quo. The latter is supposed to want things done differently from the conventional way it has always been done. Now, PDP broke the trend of maintaining status quo by electing a man born just before independence, with college degree and well schooled, and also a South-South minority to boot,as their flagbearer who became the President. Something different, and progressive. This singular progressive act caused a tremor to the entrenched Conservative core of the party-northerners-who starting agitating for a return to status quo. Now, the APC is gunning to install a President next year from her ranks. And who are the main driving force for progressive change within her ranks? The disgruntled northerners who want things back the way it used to be. Who are the main contenders as their Presidential flagbearer? Mohammadu Buhari; over seventy years old, part of the conservative class that want power back to her region. Atiku Abubakar; Former vice-president, former PDP, part of the class of the disgruntled. To name just two. Coincidentally 90% of those wanting to be their flagbearer is from the North that seek appeasement from having a South-Southerner take their birthright. What does being progressive and being conservative mean again? I am at a loss and need help here.
