What Lies Beneath: The digging of the James Center foundations - TopicsExpress

What Lies Beneath: The digging of the James Center foundations that started in 1983 exposed the remnants of at least 100 large and small water craft that had sunk to the bottom of the Great Turing Basin of the James River & Kanawha Canal. This soggy assortment of crafts were found nearly by accident, and portions of six rescued, due to the initial efforts by two men who showed up at exactly the right time, and the largesse of the developer who allowed a team of canal and archaeology enthusiasts to work in the muddy pits for three years. The intervening decades havent created any way to exhibit these finds which form a vital part for understanding Richmonds maritime and cultural life.
