What The Red Cross Means To One Woman As my Supervisor Nick - TopicsExpress

What The Red Cross Means To One Woman As my Supervisor Nick and I cleared a fire scene last week, we went to the nearest Dunkin Donuts to activate the CAC cards and review all the forms, as we usually do after a fire event. Two women came in and immediately noticed Nick and I in our Disaster Services vests. She saw that we were the Red Cross. One of the woman came over and said Thank God for the Red Cross, we need your help. This woman had given the other woman a ride to Dunkins to buy her a hot drink. She said, This woman is homeless and has nothing to her name. Can you help her please? Although the Red Cross was not able to help, I advised the woman that if she came into my office (I run a homeless outreach center in the city) on Tuesday, that I would make sure that we would find shelter for her. The woman was so relieved and thankful that the Red Cross was there at just the right time. She said, I knew the Red Cross could help. I was amazed at how when this woman saw the big Red Cross on our vests, she became immediately relieved. She new because the Red Cross was there, that things would be okay. I noticed the same when we were deployed to a tornado in Revere, MA. We were mobile feeding when the families would run out of their homes when they saw the Red Cross vehicle. They knew when they saw the Red Cross that they would be okay. To be able to provide comfort to folks that are experiencing a life changing event like a fire, hurricane or tornado, makes me feel good. Thats why I volunteer with the American Red Cross. Theres no better feeling to be able to provide lodging, food and clothing to those in desperate need. And, when a victim approaches me to hug me, it just puts a smile in my heart.
