What a cool day. Part two of my tour with Drew...we headed out to Fort Sumner and Stinking Springs. Drew pointed out historical sites along our route. We stopped of at Billys grave and then to the location of Pete Maxwells house for the marker where Billy was killed. Then we went to Stinking Springs; the place where Pat Garrett and his posse captured Billy, but not before gunning down Charlie Bowdre. Its not accessible for the average tourist, youll need Drew to make arrangements with the land owner and then find the spot thats hidden in the tall grass and brush. Unless you know where it is, youll never discovery it on youre own. Afterwards, it was back to Lincoln to say my final goodbyes before heading south to Mesilla. After passing Ruidoso on my way to Mesilla, I found what I believe was the spot of Blazer Mill, where the Regulators had a gunfight with Buckshot Roberts and where Dick Brewer was killed. Nearby is their graves, but I couldnt find it. I had to be careful because the graves were on private property and I didnt want to push my luck. It was also dark, so my visit there was quick. To end the day, I arrived in Mesilla and found the old courthouse where Billy was tried and convicted for the death of Sheriff Brady and sentenced to death. Im staying over night and will explore the old historical town tomorrow. In closing, I cant thank Drew Gomber and his wife Elise enough for making me feel welcome and for our long chats on BTK and the LCW. Theyre are geniue kind people and the wealth of knowledge that Drew has on Billy and the LCW puts him on the same level as Fred Nolan. Unfortunately, hes not appreciated enough for his experience on Old West history. I learned a lot on this trip. Again, if youre a history buff and Billy the Kid aficionado, I cant recommend enough to invest in a tour with Drew. Pic 1) Billy the Kids grave Pic 2) Billy the Kids killed here marker Pic 3) Me at the marker Pic 4) Drew Gomer at the site of the stone house in Stinking Springs where Billy and his gang took refuge. 5) A crippled old structure at Blazer Mill. Look like something right out of the Blair Witch movie. Rather creepy looking in the dark. 6) I had just arrived at Mesilla. I took a selfie with the courthouse in the background (now a gift shop). Ill check it out further tomorrow when it opens.
