What a day! I attended my first ever muslim funeral and was in a mosque for the very first time. As an Anglican, I was nervous about protocol etc, but I found the women there very welcoming. The sermon (not sure if that is what it is called in Islam) was moving. The Imam spoke about death and how it comes to us all. He reminded us to prepare for death by 1). ensuring that we have paid for our funeral ahead of our death (since we know this is inevitable) and not burden family and friends. He praised christians within the Sierra Leone community for being very good at this and urged moslems within the community to learn from that example. 2). ensuring that we have got our act together in as far as confessing our sins and begging for forgiveness from those we have wronged 3). ensuring that we are generous to those less fortunate than we are as at the end of the day we are all going to die and we never take all the things we accumulate with us. I am sharing this with you for two reasons 1). The Imam instructed us to 2). I was moved by this sermon and it occurred to me that the Imam had not said anything I have not heard in church or would be out of place in a church. It occurred to me that save for the radicals (both christian and muslim) the message from both religions is not that different really. That being the case why dont we have more tolerance amongst different religions/denominations
