What a day in Memphis! Four hours at Graceland and of course as an Elvis nut I was in my element. Very interesting décor in most of the rooms and over the top extravagance almost to illustrate he had overcome his poverty stricken beginnings. The Hall of Fame is spectacular with row after row of gold and platinum record awards…incredible and he has sold over two billion recordings! Family graves are on the property too after special permission granted by the governor and his customised Lisa Marie jet was good to see as it will be returned to the owners in Florida later this year. Then on to Sun Studio where Sam Phillips recorded many famous names and of course where Elvis rose to fame only to be sold off to RCA for $35 000. A great tour and wonderful to hear the ‘ghosts’ of all those singers and of course ‘x’ marks the spot where Elvis recorded his first hit for Sam – “That’s alright Mama”. Ended off the day cruising Beale street and its many pubs with blues and jazz and bluegrass etc…frequented four bars and all fantastic musicians. Interesting to note that I needed to produce valid ID to prove I was over 21…apparently the don’t accept a bald head and old age spots on your hands as insignia of dotage. A great day… “Y’all gotta do it sometime and have a good night y’hear!”
