What a day we have had. We left Maryland at 6:30 am and traveled south to Old Crowe Farm in Red Oak, Virginia. We were warmly greeted by the farms owners, Jim and Jacqueline Moyer. CMG Venus and CMG Serena were deposited, without incident, into their temporary quarters in one of the horse stalls and proceeded to taste the stalls dirt floor. The two piglets were not impressed with the unfamiliar soil and every taste was followed by a mouth-wide-open, tongue- sticking-out, man-thats-yucky expression. Nevertheless, the tasting continued. It seems that in the world of piglets, hope springs eternal. Next week these two will continue their journey to Tennessee. Once the girls were safely squared away, the real fun began. We received a tour of Jim and Jacquelines beautiful farm. We met their dogs and their hogs. We admired their stunning Java rooster, their luxuriously-coated Chinchilla rabbits, and their American Guinea Hog-filled freezer. Then we went inside and spent some cozy moments chatting by the fire and were treated to an amazing homestead brunch of biscuits w/sausage gravy, bacon, more sausage, Jims homemade plum jam and farm fresh eggs. The most significant moment of the day came when I learned that I am one of the many people who are not negatively affected by boar taint. Therefore, I am no longer worried about the fact that the four hogs we will be processing this year were not castrated. In addition, Im thrilled that the box of bacon (which Jacqueline finds repugnant) is now tucked securely into my freezer. A hearty thank you goes out to Jim and Jacqueline for the tour, the lively conversation, the larapin good food, and the kind invitation to return. Wild horses couldnt keep us away! **In early 2015, Jim and Jacqueline will be opening their farm to bed-and-breakfast guests. Given the hospitality we received today, I expect they will have many return visitors. Check out their website at oldcrowefarm.
