What a morning, I was woken up around 6:30 today by sirens, - TopicsExpress

What a morning, I was woken up around 6:30 today by sirens, yelling, alarms, and the neighbours noisily moving around. Had no idea what was going on and a few moments later I heard someone aggressively shaking the front door handle. I moved over to my kitchen and noticed it smelled sort of strange. When I turned on the light, I could see very faint smoke. Fire. I opened the front door to check the situation but was met with nothing but very thick smoke, so I closed the door and walked out to the balcony. I was spotted by onlookers and shortly after two fire fighters showed up on the balcony next to mine. Had to smash the thin wall between the balconies to get me over to them, then they eventually got me down out of the building by a ladder. After that I just kind of sat around outside for a while as paramedics did some checks on me. Im fine, didnt inhale any smoke and I dont feel any irritation or anything. I was told there was a fire on the floor above me and then was seated with the resident next to my room, an old man who caught me as I came back home yesterday. Yesterday, he greeted me home and told me happy new year. This morning he told me you just came back and this happens, it must be difficult. He was breathing through an oxygen mask, but didnt seem to be badly injured. He was taken away several minutes later on a stretcher, hope hes ok. We were given blankets and they had heaters set up.The neighbours made warm drinks for everyone and later after we got moved into a neighbours office, they bought us some food; even brought one girl some socks and warm shoes since she evacuated without any on. Weve been let back in since then, all my stuff is ok. Just clearing out the faint, leftover smoke right now. The hallway floor, walls, and ceiling are covered in soot and some leftover water is still on the floor. Theres a little dirt from smoke near the front door of my room, but thats all. Just gonna have to deal with smelling like a barbecue pit for a while. Again, what a morning. Ive never had anything like this happen before and Ive remained calm about it. I still need to go to first day of classes today too...
