What a surprise we got in the post today! Nick Gibb, MP, has written to the staff and children of Wylye Valley School to congratulate us on our year 1 phonics results. 95% of our year 1 children passed the phonics check which puts us in the top 5% of schools nationally. This is testament to the hard work, commitment and enthusiasm of our teachers and teaching assistants. Thank you! Mr Barnes carried out Maths Makes Sense observations this week and was very impressed with the learning of the children. He saw the reception children starting to use cups and doing the MMS actions. Year 1 were learning about measuring length with a ruler. The Maths Makes Sense Monster has been playing tricks on the children again this week, but he did ask for help with writing his numbers. Children in Galileo have been finding out about multiplication and division. They are very keen for the monster to come and visit them! In Franklin, Mr Barnes saw them finding the area of shapes, in Newton solving algebraic equations. On Tuesday afternoon, the whole school created a Christmas card design. Hopefully their designs will be sent home after the half term break. It was also on Tuesday afternoon that Tom and Rio went to Kingdown School, with Sports Ambassadors from other schools. They have been given three targets to work on back at school and led an assembly for the whole school yesterday. We had over a hundred bags of clothes donated to Rags2Riches on Thursday, raising over £230. The van driver said that he was surprised to see so many bags, as most schools have nowhere near as many, so we are very grateful to all of you who sorted out things to go in the bags. Thank you also to members of the School Association who organised this. The next collection is on 23rd January. The WVSA met Thursday evening to plan the Christmas Fair which is on Saturday 29th November, 12pm – 2pm. Put the date in your diary now. In Celebration Assembly today, a large number of children received their Reading Award for 25 reads. It was lovely to see so many children achieve this. Take a look at our photo on the school website. Congratulations to Kai, Rio, Callum and Tom who sat nervously in my office to be tested on Economy and Business Class Globetrotters Maths Passports. Their faces were great today when they realised they had passed. Mrs Collins kindly donated a Harvest loaf to the school, which we will display at our Harvest service on Wednesday. Don’t forget to send your child to school dressed as their favourite fruit or vegetable, or colour of, on Wednesday with an item of food. We are also raising money for Louies SMILES so a donation will be much appreciated.
