What an amazing and emotional day... after a wonderful rehearsal with the Orquestra Sinfônica Brasileira and Marcelo Lehninger, Ive spent the rest of the day in one of the biggest favelas of Rio, where 200.000 people live. In the middle of that city-in-the-city, Grupo Cultural AfroReggae built an AMAZING cultural center, where kids and young people can learn music, dancing, circus arts, theater. The infrastructure is absolutely mind-blowing, a couple of recording studios, even one to learn to be a DJ, a huge ballroom for dancers...many of the kids there were in prison, are in prison ( and have the right to go out to be creative!), or are sentenced to go to prison. In the center, they know they will not be jugged by what they were, but by what they will become, and the rise of culture and intern listening and love to each other directly influences the entire favela. It was fantastic talking to the team and learning about the similarities and differences of their methods compared with the Sistema, and see the complexity of the problem, which is not even close to what our media shows us.
