What an excellent class last evening. We have a dog who is more - TopicsExpress

What an excellent class last evening. We have a dog who is more interested in everything else in his environment than on his owner. To the point of, having no connection between the outside world and his owner. Used a method called click to calm. To the novice this would look like the dog is getting clicked and treated for nothing. In reality the dog was getting clicked for giving anything but looking at his owner. What was being looked for and rewarded was every turn of the body to his owner, an ear flick, an eye glance, a blink of the eye, a shoulder turn, a tail relaxed. Everything on the dogs body was being observed and rewarded for calm or orientation back to the owner. A very high incentive was being used, squeeze cheese, peanut butter, meat flavored baby food. The dog WORKED for us and he was paid well. While the other dogs and handlers were working a recall, a very high distracting cue, this dog was actually laying down with his face towards the owner. It worked, the handler left with a smile on her face. And you wonder why positive association and reinforcement training works. How much better is this for the dog than a leash correction or (cant even type the word) another painful method of training where the dog learns to stand like a statue to avoid pain. Thank you for all those who actually work the program offered to them.
