What are Public Service Jobs? - Theyre cleaners, kitchen staff, police officers, orderlies, pharmacists, firefighters, teacher assistants, parks rangers, forestry workers, bus drivers, engineers, planners, child protection officers, librarians, nurses, pathologists, forensic officers, environmental health officers, doctors, court staff, prison guards, ambulance paramedics, dental technicians, customer service staff, maintenance staff, IT specialists, emergency service radio room operators, social workers, midwives, school and TAFE teachers, railway and port workers... the list goes on and on... The Hodgman Liberal Government isnt proposing a one-year pay freeze. Theyre proposing ending the capacity of all public sector workers to ever bargain for wages ever again. Thats never been done anywhere in Australia. It will mean Tasmanian nurses, teachers, doctors, police etc. will all be the lowest paid in the country. It will mean some people will get paid less than the minimum wage. This isnt about public v private. If the Government can change the law to do this to public sector workers you can bet theyll do it to all workers soon enough. And that means lower wages for everyone and no rights in the workplace. This is about standing up for all working people so that in 20 years time our kids can get decent jobs that might actually pay the bills.
