What are the symbols of power today? Have we heroes or icons that can stand out as pillars of strength and inspiration? Even the ones we have on a popular scale, mostly seem to be icons of personal success, and these are subjected to in-depth scrutiny, as if in this success, they must also prove to be without sin in behavior. So instead do we have to get historical in our search for icons for inspiration? Does our culture still support enough historical iconography to make this possible? It requires history and literature for those icons to retain or gain power over the contemporary citizen, and everything points to this not being the situation. People like Swanson, Assange, and even wonderful journalists like Jeremy Scahill, Naomi Klein, or Helen Thomas, all provide some sort of role modeling and hero status, I suppose, but their activities are in an odd sense passive. They present and represent a reality, but it’s up to others to act upon the knowledge they sometimes heroicly provide. Is the only place we’d find heroes then in the movies or on TV? Or in fantasy books? Maybe Stories are still our source of heroes, in the form of The Hero with a Thousand Faces.
