What are we all to make of Ed Miliband? Searching the net it is impossible to find a decent even handed analysis of him & his political beliefs. All the articles are heavily coloured. Personally, I dont think he is an old school socialist. He is a social democrat. He is above all Fabian who believes that it is responsibility of people like him to do the right thing for rest of us. They are the few wise heads & souls. He knows he needs the market. His mission is to tame it & regulate it. He wants to intervene before breakfast, lunch & tea. He wants government to tell citizens what to do. There are plenty downsides to this no matter how benign his intentions. He wishes to emulate Mrs T. He wants to change the political landscape for generation or two as she did. Is what he wants workable? I have my doubts. Human beings value freedom in the end. Even if it means the freedom to make mistakes & screw themselves up. At present he is playing the part of a latter day consumer champion reminiscent of Ralph Nader.
