What bothers Lopez most about the mainstream perception of undocumented immigrants is the lack of context and empathy. She feels the media, for instance, never cover the causes of migration. At the end of the day, they dont consider why were here. In general, there is a lot of hate. We need more compassion - and not just towards immigrants, she says. What is all too often lacking in the good ol USA these days is plain old-fashioned compassion and empathy. After all, all of our ancestors came to this country seeking a better life. They were nearly all economic immigrants. So whats new about the arrival of people from Mexico and Central America who hope to find more opportunity here?
