What can you tell us about the pond in your garden? We know a lot about ponds and that they have tremendous potential to support a wide variety of wildlife. However, as a nation we know much less about the ponds in our gardens than we do larger ponds in the wider countryside. Recognising this, through various activities we are building our evidence base in relation to garden pond habitat so that we might provide better, more effective advice in the future. With this in mind, we have identified a number of frequently occurring problems, as well as a few unusual issues. We really want to hear from you if you have had recent first-hand experience of any of the problems identified in the list below in your garden pond. Perhaps you could let us know what you did and whether it worked. Please contact us if you have: Removed or reduced the number of fish in your pond for wildlife Designed your pond to accommodate fish as well as wildlife Have successfully managed duckweed or blanket weed Had issues with any of the following non-native invasive species New Zealand Pygmyweed (Crassula helmsii) Curly waterweed (Lagarosiphon major) Parrot’s feather (Myriophyllum spicatum) Water fern (Azolla filiculoides) Other species introduced with an aquarium or garden centre purchase Had issues with siltation or excessive leaf litter Observed an oily residue on your pond Had too many amphibians Have successfully retrofitted an ornamental pond to make it more wildlife friendly Built a garden pond using puddling clay or a geosynthetic liner We are looking for case studies to contribute towards a book we are helping with on garden pond creation & management and your insight could be valuable.
