What do you get when you cross a local mom passionate about exploring nature with a self-professed “nature nerd” and environmental educator from Michigan? The answer is Wild Whatcom, a non-profit organization based in Bellingham, whose mission is to foster a lifelong connection with nature and community through outdoor exploration and service. According to Executive Director Randy Leventhal, Wild Whatcom began when two women leading independent but similar efforts combined forces. Aimee Frazier organized informal groups with friends and family to hike and explore local trails. Holly Rodger was focused on environmental education in classrooms and camps. After a weekend retreat with these two women and a handful of other inspired locals, Wild Whatcom was born. In the past few years, it has grown to include a variety of programs, including explorer clubs, camps, and family outings. More than just teaching naturalist skills and fostering an appreciation of nature, these programs encourage the personal, social, and emotional development of participants through relationships within themselves, with others and with the earth.
