What do you remember from Kindergarten and 1st grade? I would bet it wasnt the testing and assessments and double doses of instruction. You learned at the pace that was right for you - not reading and doing math problems all day! I remember art, story time, learning numbers and letters... Playing with friends and building relationships that I still maintain 40 years later! I turned out quite successful. Thank you for this article Lisa Garcia-Hanson. Being a PE teacher has grown increasingly frustrating seeing the cutting of recess, Music, art, and PE for more curriculum and testing! We ALL know what young children need, but the ones setting the rules just want to show success... What they dont understand is KIDS NEED TO BE KIDS!
