What does Major League Baseball have in common with a National Historic Landmark in Hot Springs, Arkansas? Teams and players such as Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner, and Jackie Robinson, were drawn to the hot mineral baths available on Bathhouse Row as well as the night clubs and beautiful scenery of Hot Springs, one of the first locations used for spring training. Eight closely spaced bathhouses and attendant fountains, promenades, and stairways constitute the nations largest group of facilities illustrating the 19th- and 20th-century spa movement. They also include a fascinating and eclectic collection of architectural styles; Neoclassical, Renaissance Revival, Spanish, and Italianate. Hot springs in this mountain valley have been regarded as places for healing since prehistoric times. In 1832 the area was set aside as a federal reserve. It became a national park in 1921. Fordyce Bathhouse is open to the public as a visitors center and museum. Buckstaff Bathhouse still operates in its historic function as a public bathhouse.
