What does it mean to be filled with the Holy Spirit? There are two root words used in Greek to define the concept of “filled”. One word is “πληʼρης”, pleireis, to be under the influence of and to fill up a deficiency, and “πιʼμπλημι” or “πληʼθω”, pimpleimi or pleithō, to be filled and be affected mentally. In the first instance, the Holy Spirit does govern a person Divinely. In the second instance, a person becomes educated in the Law-word of God to the end that s/he has a change of mind and a change of habits. Some examples of “πληʼρης”, pleireis are: Luke 4:1 (Jesus returned from the Jordan full of the Holy Spirit after his period of temptation); Acts 9:17 (Paul was commanded by Ananias to be filled with the Holy Spirit; and, Acts 7:55 (Stephen was full of the Holy Spirit who saw into heaven). Also, Ephesians 5:18 (Be filled with the Spirit…) and Luke 2:20 (Jesus “grew. and became strong in spirit, being filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon him”). Some examples of “πληʼθω”, pimpleimi or pleithō, are: Acts 13:9 (Paul being filled with the Holy Spirit looked intently upon Elymas and addressed him) and Luke 1:41(Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit at Mary’s arrival.
