What does it say about an organization that is built on a rock of lies? The church claims that the first pope was St. Peter, in the 1st century! This Peter is a New Testament fictional character. There is no evidence that he existed. The church claims that they had 32 popes before christianity was legal in the Roman Empire. Most of them are barely known. Christian churches didnt really begin development until the 4th century. In 326, the Constantinian Basilica was built on the hoax-tomb of fictional Peter. There are only around 3 churches that claim to have been built earlier. The oldest near-complete NT has been carbon dated to around 360 CE. The church claims that they had 35 popes prior. These early popes were nothing like modern popes. The church simply called them popes much later to make itself appear to have a more extensive history. The overriding problem is that the term ‘pope’, in the context it is now used, only became the exclusive prerogative of the Bishop of Rome in the late 4th century, during the reign of Siricius (the 38th pope), December 384 to November 399 CE. Prior to that the Greek pappas and the Latin papa was commonly used in their original sense to refer to any priest or prelate, in much the same way that today’s Catholic priests are called ‘father’. It is the retroactive application of this title to those prior to Siricius. popes-and-papacy/wordpress/the-first-pope-in-terms-of-historical-factuality-it-would-be-pius-i-10-or-siricius-38/comment-page-1/ Here is what WIKI says: The earliest record of the use of this title was in regard to the by then deceased Patriarch of Alexandria, Pope Heraclas of Alexandria (232–248).[18] The earliest recorded use of the title pope in English dates to the mid-10th century, when it was used in reference to Pope Vitalian in an Old English translation of Bedes Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum.[19] The title was from the early 3rd century a general term used to refer to all bishops.[20] From the 6th century the title began to be used particularly of the Bishop of Rome, and in the late 11th century Pope Gregory VII issued a declaration that has been widely interpreted as stating this by then established Western convention.
