What does the absence of one word in a communication mean? How about everything? On this date in 1776, the Continental Congress approves of General George Washingtons refusal to open a communique from British commanders William Howe and his brother Admiral Richard Howell because the letter did not address Washington as General Washington. They did use another popular greeting (and did not resort to name-calling). Anybody know what the name was that they addressed Washington as? Along with supporting Washington, Congress authorized all other general officers to only read letters in the characters they respectively sustain. Answer revealed later tonight!
