What if you didnt pay tax? Thats not something most of us would ever consider...well, unless you happen to be a multi-billion dollar corporation. According to an explosive new report from the Tax Justice Network (TJN), Australias top companies are potentially forgoing billions in tax each year.1 One of the worst offenders? Rupert Murdochs 21st Century Fox. So while were all proudly doing our bit to support a fair and prosperous Australia, big business is giving it a big miss. And instead of collecting what should be due, the Governments hitting everyday Australians with massive budget pain — cutting public health, education and our social safety net. But the TJN report made such big waves, even Treasurer Hockey had to talk big on cracking down on tax dodging.2 That proves if they feel enough heat, theyll have to do something. According to the TJN report, Murdochs 21st Century Fox uses a whopping 117 offshore subsidiaries to deny Australia its full share of its box office profits.3 In fact, almost 60% of the top 200 listed companies send their profits on extended holiday in largely tropical, offshore tax havens.4 And 14% of the top companies have an effective tax rate of nada — thats ZERO in Spanish.5 Something clearly needs to be done. The TJN report has a smart list of savvy recommendations, from increasing penalties and tightening tax laws, to ensuring the Australian Tax Office actually has the resources to pursue corporate tax dodgers, after the Government slashed its budget.6 Right now, the Governments paying lip-service, but to turn their rhetoric into reality, we have to make the pressure last by building a movement for tax justice that helps spare everyday Australians from cruel budget cuts.
