What in hell is going on at FSU In response to an ESPN public records request made by Outside The Lines reporter Paula Lavigne, the Tallahassee Police Department has released hundreds of police incident reports referencing Florida State student-athletes. Lavigne, in an email dated September 17, 2014, requested reports for over 360 athletes – whether they were listed as a victim, suspect, witness or reporting party. Lavigne also noted in her communication that ESPN was not “fishing” – she claims it will be used for part of an analytical study. Although we are not required to provide a reason for our request, rest assured this is not a “fishing expedition.” This is part of an analytical study and the number of hits, or lack thereof, is all part of the reporting. The officer narrative is also part of the data collection and is a necessary element. The Tallahassee Police Department has issued a statement on the matter. It claims that during the process, it did find a mistake made in one case. During the process, it was discovered one case had a piece of evidence which was not immediately processed. The follow-up report details the steps taken to process the evidence in July 2014, which ultimately had no impact on the case. The case was subsequently reclosed. As a result of the request, it’s also come to light that freshman running back Dalvin Cook is listed as an associate in an open aggravated assault case from back in July.
