What is Basal Body Temperature Charting? Basal body temperature charting (BBT), when taken regularly, can give a women an indication of when she is ovulating. The BBT should be taken first thing upon waking, even before getting out of bed. By taking and recording her temperature everyday over a period of several months, a clear pattern of a womans cycle can be established. Taking these temperatures every day requires a certain level of commitment. However for women who struggle taking the contraceptive pill or for those who would like to start a family. The inconvenience is far outweighed by the benefits. A Chinese medicine fertility specialist will look at the BBT chart in a way that differs from the Western medical GP. Certain aspects of a chart can show pathology to the trained eye. Chinese Herbal Medicine and Acupuncture can be implemented to rectify pathology that is apparent in a chart. The temperature chart should be lower in the follicular phase (Day 1-14), with a sudden fall followed in succession by a sudden rise at ovulation. The temperature should rise between 0.2 -0.4 degrees at ovulation and stay high for at least 3 days in the luteal phase (day 14-28). This, along with the prelude of fertile mucous leading up to day 14* will indicate an effective ovulation. A cooler follicular phase will produce better quality eggs and will lead to a stronger corpus luteum with good progesterone levels. In Chinese medicine, we encourage this by nourishing the yin in the follicular phase to build the yang in the luteal phase. A strong corpus luteum should produce ample progesterone to keep the luteal phase temperature high. Any drops or sudden dips could indicate luteal failure and progesterone deficiency. * Please be aware that not every women will ovulate on day 14 of her cycle. The length of a cycle and ovulation can vary greatly amongst women. Some women, even though they have a 28 day cycle may ovulate later than day 14. In this case charting is an excellent way to determine the best time to have intercourse.
