What is Dermatoglyphics? Dermatoglyphics, the word comes from two Greek words; where “derma” means skin and “glyphe” means the pattern. The field of Dermatoglyphics had been studied for more than 200 years. Some of the notable scientists that had contributed towards this field are: 1892-Sir Francis Galton a British anthropologist and a cousin of Charles Darwin, published his book, Fingerprints, establishing the individuality and permanence of fingerprints. 1926-Harold Cummins, the Father of Dermatoglyphics studied all aspects of fingerprint analysis, from anthropology to genetics and embryology perspective. In 1943 he published a book, “Finger Prints, Palms and Soles”, a bible in the field of dermatoglyphics. 1950- Professor Penfield indicated relationship between finger-prints and the brain in his work. Professor Roger W. Sperry and his colleagues were awarded Nobel Prize in Bio-medicine for their study of the lateralization of the brain By the 20th century with the advancement of technology, scientist started to explore the benefits of analysing the 10 fingerprints. Dermatoglyphics started to be linked to the field of Embryology, Genetics, Neuroscience, Abnormal Psychology, Forensic Psychology and Pediatric Psychology.
