What is Taqlid? Explain it Simply Ans: OK. Taqlid literal means following someones opinion (without further investigating) in other words trusting upon the verdict on some issue by any Imam. This regulates two things. 1) is taqlid proven from Quran? 2) Did Sahaba do this act? 3) Is following of Imam means not following of Quran and Sunnah? Answers are here; 1) Is taqlid proven from Quran? Yes Taqlid is proven from many verses of Quran al Hakim, and among them one famous ayat (verse) of Holy Quran states: Obey Allah, Obey His Messenger, and obey those who are authority amongst you. This verse of Quran according to almost all fuqha (scholars) in 1400 years of Islam are agreed that, this is direct (Nass) (Rule/Hukm) of Quran in respect of Taqlid and in honor of following those who are experts in knowledge among us. (Note for detail check makashfa blog) Now, 2) Is Taqlid and Ijtihad (analogical deduction) has been done by any of Sahaba? Yes! I had given a comprehensive scans folder full of evidences in this regard. In short the question is that whether Sahaba (companions) Do this act?, did they gave their own verdict on some issue? and did the Muslims accepted that? Answer is very simple. When Syaduna Umar (Rd) started Bidat e Hasana (i.e, 20 rakat of Taraveeh), this good innovation according to his own words was accepted by all companions without questioning further this and that. Now this is a clear example, another example can be, again Hazrat e Umar (rd) Put a legal stop to Muta and majority accepted that, because there is Hadith that Prophet alehisalam says, Follow my Sahaba, they are like the shining stars for you to be followed for the way. And as Quran states, follow those who are authoritative among you, so After Allahs Law (i.e, Quran), if one does not find any answer to his questions clearly, its Order of Allah to follow the way of the Prophet alehisalam, so We search about that issue in Prophetic sayings, Because Prophet alehisalam never said anyword from his own, but from Allah. So this means we got two basic stones for our law of Islam, i.e, Quran and Sunnah (which includes Hadith (verbal action of Prophet alehisalam)). So when there is nothing found openly in prophetic sayings, then its better to follow the way of Companions i.e, as Quran said, and after Allah there is Prophet alehisalam Hujjat (Authority) among us and after him Companions are there, and even actions of Companions cannot talk expressly and solute the problem, then its better to accept the way of Tabiun (Companions of the Companions of Prophet alehisalam). This is also ordered by Prophet alehisalams hadith about Khair al Quroon, or Quroone Ouulaa which regulates 3 generations after prophet alehisalam. Now if there is still not a solution for our matters in Tabiuns sayings or verdicts than, its ordered and a proper way to follow those people who had reached the time of those companions of the companions, these are called Taba Tabiun. (c/of the c/ of cps). This is the way of Islam, now When we say following of Imam, that means because it is not possible for everyone to be a Jurist, or to be a Scholar so there is need of those people who are authoritative among us. So we can trust their verdicts because of their highest and eminant status in the sciences of Quran, Hadith and Tradition of Ummah. So when for a problem they issued a verdict, that verdict is totally based on their extensive knowledge and we Muslims Trust our Elders. So we accept their verdict without further arguing in it, because all research and analysis are been done by those imam. Now as the passage of time only 4 Jursitic schools of thought been left in Muslims, and Status of following of Imams are only reached to these four famous Imam who are founders of the school of thoughts. I.e, Imam al Azam (rd) - Hanafi Imam al- Shafie (rd) - Shafie Imam ahmed bin hanbal - Hanabil Imam Maalik (rd) - Maliki fiqh The status of this higher status is now closed for anyone, because no one is able to reach or in other words qualify the Higher status of HADITH, if someone is able to qualify his knowledge as per mentioned in the established sciences of Hadith, we welcome them, if they could? So in short. Following of Imams verdict is not Blindly as they think, but it is actually following of Quran and Sunnah. and we do not consider these four schools of thoughts different upon Aqeeda. Most important thing is that WE DO NOT FOLLOW ANY OF IMAM IN AQEEDA BUT WE FOLLOW THEIR VERDICT IN FIQH Fiqh (is Islamic jurisprudence in short), let me explain little this to clear any wrong concepts. Aqeeda is E.g Allah is One There is no god but ALLAH ALONE Prophet Muhammad (alehisalam) is His Messenger and Blessed Prophet Belief in hereafter Belief in the Day of Judgement Belief in Angels etc. These are basic fundamental beliefs of Islam which are called AQEEDA. We do not follow any imam in aqeeda, e.g if any one says that Allah is not alone (maaz-Allah) then surly he is wrong and that person could be a Satan but not an Imam. And Alhamdolillah none such kind of stupid things ever happened in Islam (as in other religions did). So We follow their verdicts of Fiqh, Which one can say that Fiqh is Sharia Laws, derived from Quranic and ahadith sources, its like the administrative laws from Quran and Sunnah and Ijma (concensus of Ummah). So its total lie if someone says that Sunnis are blindly following Imams, this is clear deception from Satanists among Muslims. i.e, Wahabi/Salafism. So as following of Quran and Sunnah is important, such importance is to be followed all those righteous people who derived these laws for the ease of ordinary Muslims to understand and trust of their Knowledge. May Allah guide us all on the right path of Islam and Aima-e- Salaf Saliheen.
