What is Wetlands Mitigation? Wetlands are protected in Virginia, and Nationally. The Virginia Water Protection permit regulations state that "mitigation means sequentially avoiding and minimizing impacts to the extent practicable, and then compensating for remaining unavoidable impacts of a proposed action" (9 VAC 25-210-10). When a developer wants to build something, anywhere they need to first check if the land is considered a wetland. Sometimes that is obvious, often it takes researchers some time to determine. There are many types of wetlands; swamps, vernal pools, tidal wetlands, bogs, and a few others. Some are seasonal, some are intermittent, and some are just constantly wet. If the land the developer would like to build on is determined to be a wetland, they must avoid and minimize impact. But sometimes that just doesn’t work. So they must mitigate. The long term goal is to maintain or increase the number of acres of wetlands in Va. So if they must reroute a wetland, or even destroy it, the developer must increase wetland acreage in another area. On Saturday we will see what is being done regarding the wetland area at Long Park. I hope you can join us for a short hike and information!. Meet at the playground at 10 am, bring water, bug spray and sturdy shoes. Please RSVP to the event posted on this page.
