What is a Standardize Patient Simulation? Standardized patient (SP)simulation encompasses the use of individuals trained to act as patients, family members or others individuals involved in a healthcare environment that allows students to actively and in real time practice physical exam skills, history taking skills, communication skills and other none invasive processes. A Standardized Patient is an individual that is carefully recruited and trained to depict the characteristics of a real patient thereby providing the student with an opportunity to learn and to be evaluated in a simulated clinical environment that is reflective of real world scenarios, under safe and controlled conditions. Standardized patients provide a controlled an easily reproducible clinical situation, where all variables of the patient and situation are identified and controlled. Standardized patients are trained to depict a clinical problem which can be presented on demand at any time or in any environment. Standardized patients provide the student with a unique opportunity to practice their skills in a as real world and practical situations as possible Of specific benefit is the standardized patients ability to provide real time feedback. Since the standardized patient is not dependent on the examining student for actual care, they are in a unique position to offer the student relatively objective and unbiased feedback on their rapport, manner, approach, communication skills etc… Standardized patients may be utilized in group settings permitting students to rotate through interviewing and examining them. The standardized patient can provide a “freeze moment “ allowing stoppage time for student peer evaluation and discussion. The standardized patient can challenge the student to integrate the taxonomy of areas related to patient care from understanding the patient’s problems on a physiological level to dealing with patient diagnosis, clinical management and interpersonal relationships. An added opportunity is that all aspects of patient symptomology, complications, and prognosis can be openly discussed in front of a standardized patient without concern for their reaction to that information.
