What is an Expressive Language Disorder? Many children that I work with have an expressive language disorder, and it is quite common in school aged children. An expressive language disorder is a communication disorder in which there are difficulties with verbal and written expression. The cause of expressive language disorders is unknown. Symptoms of this disorder may include any of the following: * Below-average vocabulary skills * Improper use of tenses (past, present, future) * Problems making complex sentences * Problems remembering words Difficulties with expressive language can often interfere with academic achievement and/or with social communication. The attached video is a great example of someone who has an expressive language disorder. You can see often that Sariah KNOWS what she wants to say, but has a very hard time expressing herself. She uses filler words (e.g., uh, mmm), has difficulty recalling words and uses many pauses in her sentences/ thoughts. You can also hear that her sentences are sometimes disorganized (poorly constructed) and seem very simple for her age. youtube/watch?v=BnRNeDtme0g
