What is capital? Is it money as we are trained to believe? I spent the day pondering this, trying to calibrate my low bank account with the joy I feel. So I did a little experiment on my way home. I tallied up how much was given to me today in advice, support, friendship and guidance and gave that back to the world in smiles to strangers and flowers to homeless men, taxi drivers and old women sweeping sidewalks. I gave away what I received thinking I would end where I started this morning. No, the capital of a smile and kindness went beyond that, as I got a deep hug from the homeless man, a sigh if relief from the taxi driver and a smile that could light the entire city of San Francisco from the working women, not to mention the girl who stopped me to say that not only was I beautiful but I was being beautiful as well. To me that capital is worth more than any dollar bill in my account.
