What is core training? A typical response would be somewhere in the ballpark of...its exercises that work your abs. This, however, is only a part of what core training actually entails. From a simplistic standpoint, core training involves the muscles of the low to mid back, internal and external obliques (love handles), and the abdominals. The core is the foundation or pillar of your body and its movement. A strong core can alleviate or reduce low back pain, enhance your ability to perform ADLs (activities of daily living), improve postural balance, and increase athletic performance. I always incorporate core movements near the beginning of my workouts in an attempt to wake up these areas. Below is an example of how I accomplish this: Abdominal - Floor Crunch Oblique - Side Plank (each side) Low Back - Superman I usually perform 12-15 repetitions of each exercise (15-45 seconds on the Side Plank depending on your exercise experience) and repeat two to three times. Please refer to a credible source for proper exercise execution of these movements or feel free to contact me. In addition, performing most exercises involving free weights such as dumbbells, kettlebells, and medicine balls should also be utilized to strengthen your core. In conclusion, a strong and developed core is the foundation of all functional activity and it should be a focus in all exercise programming.
