What is ear tipping? Ear tipping for us is a visual way of noting what cats in a colony have been spayed or neutered. Ear tipping is a quarter inch off left ear. It is necessary otherwise we never really know who has been spayed or neutered. You might think you know all the cats in your colony, then 3 more black ones show up. Colony caretakers change over time and I have had a dreadful time when people did not ear tip and I did not know exactly who was fixed and who was not. A spay is also a major surgery, and not ear tipping a cat means a cat may have to go through this process twice - highly unnecessary not to mention stressful confinement for the cat. Also progressive animal control facilities are calling rescues and scanning for chips when feral cats arrive that are ear tipped which means they will not be euthanized at a city shelter. Microchipping (a feral cat cannot be scanned on the street) will track down the colony or caretaker so the cat can go back to their outdoor home
