What is love? When we love someone, we expect that they will love us back because we are in a relationship with them. When we buy a Valentine’s Day gift for someone special, naturally, we expect a gift in return because we are celebrating love on that special day. The same holds true when we do something nice for somebody. Maybe we cheer them up when they feel down because we treat others the way we want to be treated. This type of love is actually a love that comes from the ego, it is a conditional love. This type of love can cause disappointment, pain and heartache when the love is not reciprocated and causes conflict in our relationships. How can we overcome this? Begin by learning about spiritual love, a love that is unconditional. This type of love brings joy into our lives because we love without expectation. Love becomes a sense of being. Once we build a solid spiritual practice, we become one with God, and we begin to love everyone unconditionally; hence reducing the disappointment, and improving our relationships.
