What is so embarrassing and frightening to me is that our leaders like Heidi Heitkamp,Mary Landrieu, Manchin, Walsh and others, supposedly acting on our best behalf, and Im sure are intelligent people, can be so misled on this! THEY JUST DO NOT GET IT! It behooves me how they can use any language, any stat, any school of thought or rationale that even begins to compete with the absolutely compelling evidence that if we dont act now to stop extreme extraction of fossil fuels and work over the next 5 decades to build a renewable economy, we face imminent and catastrophic civilization destabilizing consequences. ALL their arguments are framed in terms of relative economics and efficiencies based on reliable inflows of fossil fuels and jobs. They call their adversaries environmentalists fer crisssakes!! As if its the whale or harp seal or clean water people. This categorical slur is ridiculous aspersion to cast now when far more transcendent questions are at stake It is so damn telling and tragic in a sense that soft social scientists, as politicians are, just are way way over their head in handling this immense predicament in the way it needs to be addressed. They need to stand down to the hard scientists who deal in empirical facts gleaned from direct observation and study about what is going on in the state of nature. THEY JUST DO NOT GET IT! And people defer to these people as if they really trust there is cedible debate. There simply is NO debate anymore that we HAVE TO DO SOMETHING to first slow the rate of human caused emissions, then arrest it, then begin to reduce it. There is NO OTHER CHOICE! If we dont stop ALL extreme forms of extraction we are cooked, period. We have to set reasonable time frames for this and it cant be 10 years, but it might be 35 -50 years.
