What is the difference between...? ...An osteopath and a physical therapist? A physical therapist is primarily concerned with remedying disabilities or impairments of the musculoskeletal system. They promote mobility, functional ability, quality of life and movement potential through examination, evaluation, diagnosis and physical intervention/exercise. Compared to osteopathy, a physical therapist’s main focus is restoring movement through rehabilitative exercise, some hands on therapy and series of home care advice/exercises. PTs are a fundamental part of health care in improving and maintaining functional mobility. Osteopaths are trained to focus on finding the root cause of the problem, addressing that as primary before looking at how to correct posture and restore health on all areas. Per osteopathic medicine, if the root of the problem is not addressed, resolution solely through exercise or joint manipulation won’t be permanent. An osteopath will recommend 2-6 initial visits, depending on the complaint(s). The aim is to get the patient better, in as few sessions as possible, with quarterly visits to follow up and maintain good health.
