What is the name of God in your language? In Chinese languages - TopicsExpress

What is the name of God in your language? In Chinese languages and Vietnamese, the concept of pagan gods (in religions with a pantheon or simply various gods) is much different from the concept of a one and only, almighty God in Christianity and Islam. A pagan god would be called 神 (shén, san4) or thần, which originally means a spirit, a being of spiritual force only, and its used in various words to describe mental or spiritual concepts unrelated to gods. The Almighty God, however, is called 天主(tiānzhǔ, tin1 chyu2, Thiên Chúa) or more colloquially, 上帝 (shàngdì, seung5 di1, Thượng Đế), the first one meaning the Lord of the Heavens, and the second one means the Highest Emperor. Those concepts are merged to one word in English as simply god, although the word Lord is often used in place, as seen in the Bible to translate the Hebrew word Adonai.
