What movie do you like a lot--perhaps something obscure--and would like to recommend and have others discover and enjoy? Theres lots I could share, but one I really love and wish you guys would check out was directed by the great Japanese director Ikira Kurosawa: Stray Dog, from 1949. The film stars Kurosawas frequent leading man Toshiro Mifune and the great character actor Takashi Shimura (Shimura appeared in 21 of Kurosawas films and is also known for the original Godzilla). Mifune and Shimura worked together in numerous better known films by Kurosawa (Seven Samurai, Rashomon, Throne of Blood), but Stray Dog is one of their earlier, lesser known films. The movie is a noirish police drama about a young rookie cop (Mifune)and his older partner (Shimura). Mifunes character loses his Colt pistol to a pickpocket after which some crimes are committed with the stolen gun. The film follows Mifunes relentless search for the gun and the gun thief during a broiling hot summer. Stray Dog makes effective use of some common cop movie tropes-- single young cop, older copy partner family man, voice over narration, the heat on the beat in the sweaty city, encounters with seedy underworld figures, etc.,-- and has a wonderful sequence set during a baseball game. Not so much a great film or masterpiece perhaps, but very good and well worth your time. Name a movie youd love for others to discover, please. What is it about that film that resonates with you?
