What remains of an old home in what was Constitution, Ohio. The community of Constitution, situated along County Road 3 in Washington County Ohio, is located between Marietta and Belpre. It was an important location as an early Ohio River Underground Railroad Station, where slaves were helped to gain their freedom after crossing the Ohio River from Virginia (now West Virginia), which was a slave state until 1864. It was also the site of the Constitution Grindstone Company, one of a few companies that quarried sandstone grindstones along the high ridge above the Ohio River, which in its heyday, furnished about 90 percent of the heavy grinding wheels nationwide.
