What the problem is with regards to understanding slavery and the violent, gratuitous violence white people heap on the Black body, is that by focusing only on the cruelty of their actions and the severity of the pain, the whole thing becomes about the victim. No one bothers to say, hang on, what is the reaction of the perpetrator? When that is done, you will always find that they enjoy this violence, as a consequence, it is necessary to understand slavery, lynchings, and this obviously gratuitous violence with white enjoyment. There is no way to justify the actions of Leopold, or Colombus, or Cook, or Malan, etc., but with the enjoyment they derive from such evil. The point is to say, these horrors do not say much about the victim but everything about the transgressor.
