What to pack? This is a very personal question and the answer - TopicsExpress

What to pack? This is a very personal question and the answer varies with each individual. There are some commonalities that bear discussion, and guidelines that might help. The main thing to keep in mind is that there is precious little space on a bike for cargo. You have to make all of it count. You can spend alot of money on multi-purpose backpacker gear, but you can do it cheaply too. Remember that stuff is at risk out here. When making a purchase I always ask myself would I be sick if this fell off the bike?. I shop at the dollar store and second hand stores. Another consideration is weight. I try to keep the weight of my load from 120 to150 lbs, comparable to the weight of a passenger. Some valuable lessons were learned by packing up as if I was starting the big trek, and going out for a 10 day cruise. At the end of each jaunt I would evaluate each item as to its use and functionality. The pile of rejects was well over 50% the first time out. Here is a short list of the rejects. 1. Leathers. I know they look and feel good, but they are highly impractical for the drifter. They weigh a ton, get really heavy when wet, and take days to dry. Sorry Marlon. 2. Motorcycle boots. For the same reasons as above plus they are useless on a mountain trail. 3. Brightly colored clothing, luggage, and gear. Sometimes a good nights sleep depends on not being seen. 4. Books. I only carry one book with me (the blue one). Books are readily available on the road so I pick one up when desired and leave it in a restroom when I finish it. 5. Favorite clothing items. I was amazed at how little I wore my favorite stuff. Apparently practicality rules on the road. My next offering will include must haves for your journey. Happy Trails!
