What were the major challenges DC and Marvel faced in the 80s, - TopicsExpress

What were the major challenges DC and Marvel faced in the 80s, including in term of artistic content, continuity, sales, fan base, and in terms of whatever else you might think important? How did they attempt to handle these challenges and were they successful? Where did they fail and why did they fail? Where did the two companies stand in comparison to each other in 1980 and how had things changed by 1989? Who won the 1980s and how and why? This is a big subject and long ago, so even if you dont feel qualified to answer all of it--and I am not sure I am--feel free to address what you feel strongly about or feel competent to address. Lets not bite anyones head off here and remember that all opinions are valid. Feel free to disagree, but in a nice way and dont feel dissed if the flag you raised isnt saluted. Overall Ive been well impressed by the knowledge and ability of this group when it comes to the 1980s in comics, so I got hopes for this thread. If anyone wants to give us some idea of their age, and when they read comics (Silver Age, Bronze Age, or by decades, etc) so we can appreciate where youre coming from and how well you are informed for someone of that age group. that would be nice. I grew up during the Silver Age, for instance. I was weaned on the middle of the Silver Age and read comics into the early 70s. Then not so much until I discovered Claremonts X-Men with the 1980 Days of Future Passed comic and fell in love with comics again. I read comics all through the 80s and into the early 90s.
