What, when and where was the first concert you ever attended in Kansas City? Mine was the Beach Boys. It would have been about 1965 or so at Municipal Auditorium. A friend, Jerry Mantell, his little brother and I sat in the nosebleed section about as far from the stage as you could possibly get. (Jerrys little brother slept through most of it.) The opening act was a local band called Chessmann Squar). Chessmann Square was comprised of a bunch of local kids, including a few from the Hodgsden family. I would later go to high school with Gary Hodgsden (and I guess his older brother went there, too, although I didnt know him). The Hodgsden family had the paper route in my neighborhood in south KC and would throw our paper on to my familys driveway every morning and evening. The Hodgdens would later break off and form another band in the 70s or early 80s called Shooting Star which had a bit of success getting some of their music played on album rock stations. We played them at a radio station I programmed in Dallas, Texas. I think some of the Hodgdens eventually adopted stage names, so you wont find Hodgden listed as the surname of any of Shooting Stars members names. Pictured below, Chessman Square.
